Here is my account of the day as an extra on the set of Oxford Murders yesterday:
'I arrived home from the Set about two hours ago and I am so excited. I don't really know where to start I will post a little now and then more detail later probably at the weekend, cos I got work tommorow.
Elijah was there but did not do the scene with us today, there was someone acting as a professor and John Hurt. But I was able to look at Elijah for a long time because all the extra's including me were standing a few feet away from him or sitting in a coach very close to him and John Hurt where they stood for ages outside a trailer. I got two pictures on my moblie of Elijah. I could not bring myself to go over and chat with him although a couple of extra's did. I got a bit self conscious and didn't want him to think I was there for the wrong reasons so I just left it alone.
Maybe next Tuesday with a few of you around me I will be more courageous I think if we get a chance. He is still so beautiful, pale and something just shouts small. Everyone towers over him, he was wearing wellington boots LOL because of the snow which looked a bit OTT and a green striped scarf and the coat that he has been wearing on the set..
I learnt so much today. I was in the front row of a lecture theatre with some nice people I met today. Most of them are seasoned extra's and kept explaining the ropes
. They were mostly old and grey haired, I was one of the youngest there. The scene was of us watching a professor (not John) writing a complicated theory, we had to look interested, react and applaud over and over again in front of huge cameras and equipment. Alex picked a small section of the crowd to surround another actor and John Hurt on the end of a row, I was one of them!! John Hurt sat in the row behind me and was being filmed walking in and taking his seat (couldn't see exactly what he was doing as we had to concentrate on what we were doing).
Anyhow, the actor who was the professor at the front was behind the camera's and watching a little digital sceen, we were being filmed for quite some time, he came up to me afterwards during coffee and said 'that was worth it wasn't it' I said yes but then he said because you were being filmed a lot. I said I didn't realise because the camera looked like it might have been directed over my head, he said 'no, you even got a close up, just you'. I said I've heard that a great deal ends up on the cutting floor - he agreed. We shall see!
I missed Elijah arriving and leaving at the beginning (some other extra's saw this), I saw him comeback to the set in a car and he stayed standing outside his trailer for almost all the time I and everyone else was off the set. I kept thinking ' why is he standing there so long in the cold?'. One of the extra's said to me 'God, he smokes a lot' I didn't see him smoking but he must have been at some point.
I'm very happy
it was a great experience just watching the crew operating, oh and alex came up and said a few words to this woman next to me, his English isn't perfect and he struggled a bit I was trying to translate for him, he was adorable and kept referrring to something that was said during the exchange throughout the rest of the filming. Roll on Tuesday!

Hey, I was wearing wellies when we practically got snowed in yesterday! It means your normal boots don't get ruined, and they're very good at being non-slip! ;-)

Date: 2007-02-11 12:43 am (UTC)I hope you manage to speak to Elijah. It's strange. I've been a fan of Harrison Ford for ... how many decades since Star Wars? But I never cared whether I ever spoke to him. Elijah is not on the same level. As anyone else.
Thanks for the report. Nice to hear these personal perspectives.
