But he had a greater influence than that. In 1999, when we were casting Lord of the Rings, it was a struggle to find our Frodo. I assumed he would be a British actor, but after 200 auditions, nobody excited us. Out of the blue, Elijah Wood sends us a self-filmed audition tape. Quite honestly, Elijah never crossed our minds, but he won the role purely on the quality of the audition he had filmed himself, wearing a costume in his backyard. It wasn't until much later that I learned Elijah had run into Harry Knowles on the set of The Faculty, and Harry had convinced him to try for the role of Frodo. We felt lucky, but it was Harry who thought Elijah could play the role.

That's such a nice tribute of Peter Jackson to Elijah. It's heart warming to see that Peter is still 100% behind his choice of Elijah for the role of Frodo.
Thanks for the link, Jaramajo.

Before Harry Knowles, nobody would have found it likely that Elijah was the right actor for that part, not even Elijah himself. [ Though if you watch The War, there are hints of the emotional range an actor playing Frodo has to portray. But yet again, who would base their decision on the performance of a 13-year-old ? ] But when Harry Knowles convinced Elijah to try to get this role, it once again shows that you have to go for your desires, and try to seek unusual methods (filming his own audition tape dressed in costume in the woods) to make your efforts succeed !

Love,

- Karin.

Is that audition tape out yet to the public ? I don't believe it is.
