Variety reports that the "Spyro" videogame franchise may get a bigscreen version:

Spyro to fire up theaters Videogame franchise headed to bigscreen
By MARC GRASER

Spyro
Spyro the Dragon could soon breathe some fire on the bigscreen: The Animation Picture Co. has optioned the rights to turn the purple star of Sierra Entertainment and Vivendi Game's vidgame franchise into a toon.

APC's Dan Chuba, John Davis, Mark Dippe, Brian Manis and Ash Shah will produce the CG-animated toon as a 3-D feature.

Steve and Dan Altiere, who penned the fourth installment of Fox's "Dr. Dolittle 4," will write the script, to be based around the recently released "Legend of Spyro" trilogy of games, which is considered a relaunch of the entire series.

No director has yet been hired.

Since Spyro's introduction in 1998, game franchise has earned $525 million and shipped over 20 million units worldwide for Sierra, a division of Vivendi Games.

"Spyro the Dragon" will likely become the third toon for APC, since it was formed last year.

Company recently completed "Garfield Gets Real," a co-production with Garfield creator Jim Davis, and has moved on to "Garfield's Fun Fest." Davis produced "Garfield: The Movie" and "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties" for Fox through his Davis Entertainment.

As it's being based on the trilogy of games in which Elijah voiced the little, purple guy (the second game having just been released), he is the logical choice to bring it to the big screen, I think, even though his name has not yet been connected with this. I can't say that I'm impressed with the choice of writers or producers, though, so it might be just as well if he gives this one a pass.

I wouldn't want to see him do this either, but considering this company's made almost $600 million off the sweat of his vocal chords, they'd bloody well better at least ask him!

That's $600 million for the whole franchise ever. The vast majority of that comes from the first three (?) original and very successful titles that Elijah had nothing to do with.
