Since, I posted about the theatre counts, I might as well post about the Box Office results (I don't think this is entirely OT as they are news which can impact on his career). However, it's all behind the cut since it's dull unless you are interested.

The summary is: great for Happy Feet, not so great for Bobby.

Boxofficemojo have Happy Feet getting $42.3 million for this weekend. This beats Casino Royale ($40.6 million). There seems to be some dispute about these figures (other people have both films on $41.1 million, with Happy Feet marginally in front). I think Warner Brothers could be reporting too high; they've had a really bad year and they need Happy Feet to succeed. However, the exact figure (and even whether it is 1st or second) doesn't matter, $40 million is plenty good for a non-Pixar movie. Especially considering there have been so many other computer animated films this year. Currently at 80% at rottentomatoes (with 84% Cream of the Crop) andl also at 77% at metacritic. Good reviews, family film, holiday period, no other new family films out for a while: this all implies that the box office will be fine. From reading the reviews, some people have plot and politics problems with this film but even if this hurts the box office somewhat, I don't think this will reflect badly on anybody but the director. Happy Feet is definitely a hit and even although this is only voicework, this is really good for Elijah. If nothing else, it proves yet again that he can do PR for a big budget film.

Boxofficemojo have Bobby getting $67000 from 2 theatres. This is absolutely OK but nothing startly impressive. The concern is that the reviews have been mixed to bad and that this could imply bad legs for the expansion next week. Bobby is currently at 44% at rottentomatoes (50% Cream of the Crop) and 48% at metacritic. These are too low for there to be good Oscar chances. This is going to be a disappointment. It's not going to be an out and out huge embarassing financial bomb though since the budget is so low. I think there is an audience of a kind out there that has been enjoying the movie but the critics might put them off.

Having said all that, I don't think Elijah is going to come out of this badly at all. The actual film and film content probably will have no impact (Hollywood is definitely generally sympathetic towards the ideals behind the film), the writer/director is the main target of any criticism and the more embarassing members on the ensemble take the rest of the heat. In my opinion, the key thing from an Elijah career point of view is that the 2 shot of him and Lindsay has been used so much (it's almost the default image to show). This has to be good for his profile, especially considering it's a love scene which isn't how he's usually seen.
