I know exactly what you mean. That LOTRs scene bugs me too. I love the bitten nails just as much as i love the gap in his teeth, and even down to the fact that he smokes. To me they make him human with frailties the same as the rest of us. They also portray the fact that he really isn't bothered about convention and the Hollywood obsession with perfection. He is what he is and it's up to you whether you accept him for that. As you say he's making great inroads in getting the nails in shape, but i'd hate to see them perfectly manicured. It just wouldn't be him.

YES! Absolutely amen to every word, Belle. If Elijah decided it was a priority in his life to stop biting his nails, or even to stop smoking, I would want to be as supportive of him as possible... but I have to admit that, in either case, I would probably have to sit down and have a bit of a cry first, honestly. They are part of who he is, and I love who he is, including his human flaws and the things he does that I don't choose for myself (which does not, in the interest of full disclosure, include smoking, because I do that sometimes).

I need to make an icon of him smoking. Tonight. It shall happen tonight.

"They are part of who he is, and I love who he is"

Me too.
