I'm thinking LJ's photo gallery automatically compresses photos into a preset size, and maybe there's a way to bypass that... but it might entail needing to know how big I DO want the picture to be, and then I start getting confused. :-p

I don't use the LJ gallery for that reason. If you save photos at Photobucket, you can check the box under the photo, go to the bottom of the page and choose "Generate link codes", choose the code for LJ (it's the top code), and then you have a clickable thumbnail. It's what I always do for really large photos. This isn't an Elijah pic, just the first large one I could think of.
