With reference to the request to applaud, Alex says in his blog that he was uncertain of how John Hurt would react to having 300 inexperienced extras in front of him and that he asked us to applaud in order to put him in a good mood, in which he seemed to have succeeded. As my online translator charmingly puts it, "He was illuminated the face and I knew it would all go on wheels." There was no such request made on the second day.

I'd like to think that what you witnessed in Elijah's reaction was embarassment. You may very well be right. Frodo's face in the "You bow to no one" scene did spring to mind at the time.
